The Fall of Atalan

By Henry Kuttner and Clark Ashton Smith

(A work-in-progress)

A (nearly-finished) 'poem' (after the Egyptian-style prose poetry used by Zelazny in Creatures of Light and Darkness)
telling a story (in heiroglyph) deciphered/narrated by ___________ at the Hidden Pyramid in Act Three.

From the records of the tribe of BEL-ILTAR, land of the Other (side of the world)

Who grew in knowledge far beyond any of that time

Joining hands in common cause

Combining their energies

Their Whole greater than the sum of its parts

Their Mental Powers expanding day by day;

In due time, they called forth the Metal Powers

And built they great cities

Machines that sped across the the land

flew through the sky

Colossal ships ships that churned the seas

and dived to the depths of the deepest oceans

They harnessed the Sun Power

and the powers of the waters;

and of the very air itself

until all the Powers of Earth were theirs

Opening doors to other worlds

they spied upon the tiniest particles

and the farthest stars

Witnessed birthing galaxies

revealed the most invisible energies

Her Great Secrets laid bare,

vast powers arose from their solving

 Unlocking the Code of life

and of matter itself

They conquered form and time and distance and death;

   and bent all matter to their will.

Limitless energy

and energies without limit were theirs to command.

            Yet as their knowledge of outward ways grew,

            so also, from deep within, did grow the veiling power of OROLAK

He, the Hidden One, weaver of illusions,

invisible to the Outward Eye.

He, clouding their minds,

consuming them with their own (endeavors/desires/obsessions)

and lust for ever more ( knowledge-) power

Revealing then the Secret of Secrets

the final border

the boundary between souls

At last,

their science (knowing)

grew uncontrollably beyond itself

and in conquering all matter

did they lose their Sight

Forgetting their Origins

They grew apart from the Source

apart and from The One

and from another

Until at last, through calloused eyes

under the sleep-spell of Orolak

did they enslave their brothers

and make wars upon them;

Sparing neither women nor child, young or old, man nor beast

and feeling no remorse

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
              And Orolak drank deep of the anger and the fear and the misery
and the tears and the blood and that were spilled then,
and as the (... )
so too his power
grew greater still
And in that great cataclysm
released also the Good (beauty, love, truth)
Ahura Mazda
Abraxxas Korona
Ah-khin
the light-bearer
Champion of Truth
and Clear Sight
He (the opposing force) arose from the flames
Challenger to The Beast and its (hypnotic) power
Their battle was fierce and unyielding
brought to the very corners of the multiverse
Dismembered, he sleeps now, and feeds
on the endless nightmare generated by Man
demented bastard child of Asteroth (the Demiurge)
Growing in power so that his evil may be unbound
(The dis-membered re-membered ~ dis-unity re-united)
and free to roam the universe once more
to feast upon new races, new worlds
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

       He sleeps until the return of
The One
who bears The Key

The One
who will awaken The Sleepers

The One
who will return The Sight

to all Mankind.
